Frequently Asked Questions

What is Garitas?
Garitas is your copilot at the border.
We display real-time wait times for all border crossings and ports of entry on the Mexico–U.S. and Canada–U.S. borders, helping you choose the best moment and the fastest lane.
Are the data official?
Yes. We sync with official data from CBP — the same source each port of entry publishes — and relay it as-is, no made-up numbers.
How often is the data updated?
CBP updates wait times constantly. The web reflects them live, without reloading the page, and the iPhone app refreshes about every minute.
Does Garitas cover all border crossings?
Yes. We cover all official land ports of entry along the Mexico–U.S. and Canada–U.S. borders, including pedestrian lanes, personal vehicles, commercial lanes, and SENTRI, NEXUS and Ready Lane lanes.
Canada–U.S. crossings are currently available on the web only; the iOS app covers the Mexico–U.S. border.
Do you show SENTRI and FAST lanes?
Yes. We show the status of SENTRI (trusted travelers) and FAST (commercial cargo) lanes at all ports where they are available.
This helps compare and choose the most efficient lane.
Is Garitas free?
Yes. The web and the iPhone app are free; you don't need an account and we don't show ads.
Can I use Garitas to check SENTRI or Ready Lane times?
Yes. We break down the official SENTRI and Ready Lane times published by CBP so you can choose the fastest lane based on your documentation.
Does Garitas guarantee wait times?
No. Actual wait times may vary due to random inspections, traffic, or incidents at the port of entry.
We show the official CBP estimates alongside each crossing's hourly history so you can decide with more context.
Can I save my favorite crossings?
Yes, but only in the iOS App: pick your crossings on a live map — including the ones near you — and drag them into the order you want on the home screen.
The Web version does not support customization.
Which devices can I use Garitas on?
Web & iPhone.
The web covers both the Mexico–U.S. and Canada–U.S. borders; the iPhone app covers the Mexico–U.S. border.
Does it cover San Ysidro and Laredo?
Yes. We cover the entire border:
Tijuana: San Ysidro, Otay and PedWest.
Tamaulipas: Laredo, Colombia and Anzaldúas.
Ciudad Juárez: Paso del Norte, Zaragoza and Ysleta.
And all other official ports.
What is Ready Lane and can I use it?
Ready Lane is an express lane for documents with RFID technology, such as the U.S. Passport Card and other compatible IDs; see the official CBP Ready Lanes page for the full list of accepted documents and usage requirements.
It is faster, but you must present the physical document for scanning.
Can I cross the border with my pet?
DOGS: Generally 6+ months old and microchipped; review the CDC Dog Import Form & Instructions and the USDA/APHIS Dog Import Requirements for additional rules (e.g., screwworm certificate).
CATS: Must appear healthy on inspection; see the official CDC Bringing Animals into the U.S. page for full details.
Do I need the I-94 permit?
Yes, if you travel more than 25 miles into the U.S. or stay for more than 30 days.
You can request it via the CBP One app or on I-94 Online before crossing.
How do I know the best time to cross?
Every crossing's page includes Hourly statistics: today so far vs. what's typical for that weekday, the best hour (of the day and of what's left) and an outlook for the hours ahead.
Enough to decide in seconds whether to cross now or wait. Available on the web and in the iOS app.
